Del Toro confirmed for Hobbit films


Variety confirms that Guillermo del Toro will direct New Line/MGM’s The Hobbit and its sequel, a film that will bridge the 60-year gap between Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The announcement was made by executive producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, New Line president Toby Emmerich, and MGM Worldwide Motion Picture Group chief Mary Parent.

Seventy-five percent of New Line’s staff to be cut?


According to Variety, the transition New Line Cinema will take to become a unit of Warner Bros. Pictures may involve cutting approximately 75% of its 600 employees. As for New Line production president Toby Emmerich, it is expected that he will resign from his post. Meanwhile, speculation remains that New Line will vacate its New York office and its West Hollywood headquarters, moving onto the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.
