WB to split Materials?
Although Time Warner topper Jeff Bewkes has declared he does not want to split rights on New Line movies, the company may have to do such to adapt the next two His Dark Materials books. For instance, many of the key foreign distributors for the first installment’s movie adaptation, The Golden Compass, also have a first option to acquire its sequels, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Meanwhile, Warner has yet to even greenlight adaptations of the sequels, as it contemplates Compass‘ domestically disappointing but worldwide successful box office. Shaye, Lynne out at New Line
Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne will leave their posts as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of New Line Cinema, as part of a consolidation of Time Warner’s film operations. The duo are “in discussions about possible future business relationships with the company,” Time Warner added. Meanwhile, New Line will maintain separate development, production, marketing, distribution and business affairs operations from Warner Bros. Entertainment. Nonetheless, Time Warner explained that New Line will “closely integrate and coordinate those functions with Warner Bros. to maximize film performance and operating efficiencies, achieve significant cost savings, and improve margins.” The Hollywood Reporter has more on this report.
