Lex Luther exists Smallville
After seven seasons of portraying Superman villain Lex Luther, Michael Rosenbaum is leaving the CW network’s Smallville, says Kryptonsite. While the actor will no longer be a series regular, an official statement suggested that Rosenbaum may still have an occasional appearance in Smallville. Replacing Luther as the antagonist of the show will be the legendary Doomsday and a female antagonist whose “mutual attraction with Clark [Kent] may prove to be as deadly as kryptonite for him.”
CW dishes cocktails and controversy
Variety prints that the CW network is ditching its traditional upfront presentation for a cocktail party. The party and presentation is scheduled for May 13, set to take place at a tent just outside of Lincoln Center.
Concurrently, the network is hoping for some controversy over a new print and broadcast campaign for the series Gossip Girl. The marketing strategy is centered around the text messaging/email abbreviation “OMFG” and racy images of the show’s cast “gettin’ busy.”

Coming Soon has obtained the letter Alfred Gough and Miles Millar sent out regarding their exit from television’s Smallville. The message begins, “As the creators of Smallville we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.”
CW grabs Fuller drama
The CW network has picked up the pilot to a real-time medical drama from Simon Fuller, the creator of American Idol. Austin Golden Hour “follows a close-knit team of young emergency room surgeons and EMTs during the critical, adrenaline-filled 60 minutes immediately following a trauma.” The pilot was written by Lance Gentile and Mal Young, who are also executive producing the program. The Hollywood Reporter delivers the news.
Lucky number 13 for Raimi, CW
Variety writes that Sam Raimi, his Ghost House Productions partner Robert Tapert, and reality veteran Jay Bienstock are bringing 13 to The CW. The non-scripted series will “utilize horror-themed challenges to knock players off one by one, until just one is left, having survived all that bloodshed.”
CW moving to 90210
The CW network is developing a contemporary spinoff to Aaron Spelling’s teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210, says The Hollywood Reporter. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas may pen the project. Word has yet to arrive on the plot and characters for the series.
CW announces series renewels
Variety reports that the CW network is bringing back Gossip Girl, America’s Next Top Model, Smallville, Supernatural, One Tree Hill and Everybody Hates Chris, each for another season. However, it is still unknown whether further season installments of Reaper, Aliens in America, Crowned, Farmer Wants a Wife, Pussycat Dolls Present, The Game and Beauty and the Geek will be picked up. Having already met their end are Girlfriends, CW Now, Life is Wild and Online Nation. As for WWE Smackdown, the show will move to MyNetworkTV this fall.
